This book is a compilation of articles by Holmes that have little to do with the title. A better bet, for someone looking to improve their life through the Science of Mind, is A New Design for Living, which is the last book Holmes authored prior to his death.

After a decade underground, the DJs, MCs, b-boys, fly girls, and graff writers were finally getting their due from the downtown crowd. While trains were covered in graffiti and boomboxes were blasting on the corners, DJs were up in the clubs while the dancers rocked the floor. Artists were getting signed and local legends were born. And while others called hip hop a fad, Beckman knew better.

Her photographs transport us back to a time before music videos, marketing departments, and über-stylists took control. The queen of the 80s album cover, Beckman shot the icons of the era: Afrika Bambaataa, GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five, the Fearless Four, the World Famous Supreme Team, Lovebug Starski, Salt-n-Pepa, Run-DMC, Stetsasonic, UTFO, Roxanne Shante, Sweet T, Jazzy Joyce, Slick Rick, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. and Rakim, EPMD, NWA, Ice-T, 2 Live Crew, Tone Loc, Gang Starr, Ultramagnetic MCs, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, Special Ed, Leaders of the New School, Jungle Brothers, Beastie Boys, Rick Rubin, and countless others. Londoner Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock, working for The Face and Melody Maker. Her portraits celebrating the music and attitude of bands like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Specials, The Police, The Ramones, and the punk, mod, skinhead, 2-tone, and rockabilly culture in the UK are collected in Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude 1977–1983 (powerHouse Books, 2005). Beckman’s work has appeared in Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Glamour, to name a few. She lives and works in New York.

Def Jam Recordings mogul Bill Adler has worked alongside hip hop staples Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, and others, and is the author of Tougher than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC (Consafos Press, 2002) and a contributor to the pioneering Hip Hop photography book by Janette Beckman Rap: Portraits and Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers (St. Martin’s Press, 1991). Adler is the cofounder of NuYo Records, the founding owner of Eyejammie, a fine arts gallery devoted to hip hop, and a well-renowned archivist.

Throughout the 1980s, Tom Terrell, a.k.a. Tom T., was Washington, D.C.’s most influential club (Nightclub 9:30, Fifth Column) and radio (WHFS-FM) DJ. Since 1996, TT’s features and reviews for Vibe, Trace, Essence, Global Rhythm, and NPR’s All Things Considered have inspired music lovers at home and abroad. His pop culture essays have also been published in The Vibe History of Hip Hop (Three Rivers Press, 1999), Men of Color: Fashion, History, Fundamentals (Plexus, 1999) and Transculturalism: How the World Is Coming Together (powerHouse Books, 2004). Tom Terrell is currently working on his photo-journal memoir, Bitches, Blips & Bops: 40 Years Lost in Music.

This is just a Tickler book

I know nothing about Photoshop and I wanted to see if it was a program that I thought I would use. I was disappointed when I read through the book and discover it was a sampler... not the full book. This book is 40 pages. A lot of it just explains the history of Photoshop and why it's a good program. Not much more. So, the book didn't help this beginner! I'm glad that it was free...

About the Author
Ken Norman has been growing bonsai for over forty years. He and his wife Ann have an important collection of bonsai permanently displayed at Leonardslee Gardens, West Sussex, England. Ken is a past Chairman of both the Federation of British Bonsai Societies (FOBBS) and the Friends of the National Bonsai Collection (FNBC). He is also a founder member, past Chairman and current President of the Sussex Bonsai Group and has been involved in organizing national and international bonsai conventions. Ken and Ann have been awarded six Gold Medals at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show, including a Gold Medal at Chelsea 2004.

A Cornucopia of Bonsai Wisdom

Most bonsai books have one or several major flaws.

1. They simplify the subject to the point of being insulting to the reader.
2. The book contains few or no color photographs.
3. The step-by-step process has major gaps.
4. The book is too short to be helpful.
5. The book is ambiguous about the subject as a whole.

Ken Norman approaches the subject of bonsai professionally. He presents the subject and technique of bonsai in a friendly step-by- step manner, and negotiates past common bonsai pitfalls with uncanny ability.

This book, so far, is the best bonsai book I've ever reviewed. It is a cornucopia of bonsai wisdom. With color photography next to the carefully documented techniques, there is little room for questioning the process. This book guides you with utter confidence and is truly invaluable.
The page and photography layout is reason alone to purchase this fine book. You can't pick up this book without examining the fine bonsai specimens contained within.
If you wish to save yourself hours of research and commentary by unknowledgeable authors and supposed experts this book belongs on your shelf.

This exquisitely well written and illustrated encyclopedic text on bonsai will thrill everyone from the novice to the master!

This fully illustrated volume is ideal for everyone from the rank novice to those who already have a strong foothold in this art form. The layout of this book is extremely appealing, informational, and just begs to be browsed. I purchased this book along with "101 Essential Tips: Bonsai" for a family member who is very interested in this hobby. This encyclopedic volume is much more involved, but is very complimentary to the other one. There are 800 photographs in this book and those alone are a real plus.

The introductory pages discuss bonsai and exactly what it is and isn't. The reader is urged to "not become too ambitious too soon in the process" and "move forward in logical steps, proceeding with caution." There is a brief, but enlightening section on the history of bonsai before the book launches full force into a magnificent treatise on varying aspects of this art form. This "encyclopedia" is not laid out in an A to Z manner, but rather unfolds in a leisurely one, one that the reader can feel comfortable with and enjoy. For example, when discussing how to create a cascade bonsai, you will read a bit about what the plant represents, its style, design, and how one goes about creating such a plant. Equipment you will need is listed followed by instructions and nine small, but detailed photographs.

This highly detailed book covers so much ground I would almost say this would be the only book one would ever need, but exploring other books can be just as exciting as searching though a greenhouse looking for the perfect starter plant. In this book you will learn about different types of plants, plants suitable for inside and/or outside bonsai, the sizes of plants, the aesthetics of your bonsai, the proportions of the plants, what to look for if you want to purchase bonsai, you will see photographs of numerous magnificent plants, you learn about tools and equipment, how to collect plants from the wild, how to propagate bonsai in several different manners (seed, cuttings, grafting, air layering, the types of soil you need, pruning techniques, shaping, creating jin, creating Sharimiki, re-potting, displaying, and much more!

This exquisitely well written and illustrated encyclopedic text on bonsai will thrill everyone from the novice to the master. If you are sick of spider plants overtaking your home you just might want to express yourself and learn about bonsai. There are many books to choose from, but I'd say this is one of the better ones, especially for the beginner to an intermediate level bonsai aficionado. This book will be not only a learning experience, but a book that is a pleasure to browse. In the back of the book there is an index, a glossary, a list of suppliers (worldwide), where you can find bonsai collections, a list of organizations (worldwide), and a U.S. and Canadian plant hardiness map and zone chart. This book is very impressive and well worth adding to your library or giving it as a gift!
