Good replacement for brown crumbling original

I have an old paperback copy of this book that is brown and crumbling, and I wanted a fresh copy. In my opinion, this is a basic text for anyone interested in the early days of the establishment of Gestalt therapy and psychology. The "voices of the founders" are clear and vibrant in this collection, which contains articles I haven't seen elsewhere. I bought a Kindle edition because it won't turn brown and is unlikely to become extinct as long as a) there are people interested in Gestalt, and b) Amazon is interested in making a buck.

This 2003 edition is a reissue of the original book from 1970, when there was very little written about Gestalt Therapy. A must read.

A must-read if you are planning a trip to Japan - or even if you're not

Five stars for content, deducted a star for Paperwhite formatting. Content GREAT - but the Kindle version has formatting issues that make important parts of the text difficult to read on Kindle Paperwhite. The supplementary text at the end of chapters is in light gray lettering. It's especially annoying because the text is black when you flip the page - then it flashes and become a lighter low-contrast color that is barely readable. It's fine on a computer or color Kindle.

Roads & Kingdoms tells the story of place through food, history, people, and culture. If you are planning a trip to Japan, buy this book, without hesitation. I already had a trip to Japan planned, and the first two chapters have already convinced me that I will have a deeper understanding of what I'm about to experience because of this book. If you're not planning a trip to Japan, you will want to after reading this. It's making me want to plan a second trip to Japan already. The book is so rich in detail that I know I will only scratch the surface in my first visit. The prose is masterful, dense and engaging. It's a world beyond the typical travel guide that is little more than a list of trivia.

The supplementary information is extremely useful, and none of it is contained in the preview sample. For example, "The Rules of Sushi' details how to properly eat different types of sushi - both to avoid committing an accidental faux pas, as well as to enjoy it in the intended manner: no ginger (it's a palate cleanser), no wasabi in the soy sauce, and always eat nigiri sushi in one bite. It has pictures of different types of sushi, with the name of the item in both English and Japanese script.

It would be amazing if Roads & Kingdoms could update the Kindle version so the text of the entire book is legible in black and white. I even read the sample to check for formatting, since legibility is a very common problem on Paperwhite with anything other than plain black text. The pictures will of course need to be looked at on computer, phone, or color Kindle regardless, which is expected. Despite this, I am thrilled that I heard about this book on "Splendid Table". It will enrich my trip to Japan as well as my understanding of Japanese history and culture.

Emerging from materials the author developed while teaching, A Handbook to Classical Japanese draws on twenty-five years of experience in addressing problem areas for those learning the language. The work deals with the central issue of classical language, namely, ‘verb’-endings: specifically, the endings of verbs, verbal adjectives, pseudo-adjectives, and verb-suffixes. The Handbook treats the issue systematically, presenting 670 real-language examples, nearly 400 of which are discretely different quotations.The work’s extensive Introduction walks the reader through key problem areas, with sections on "Which Verbs Belong to Which Conjugation?" "How to ‘Unpack’ Bungo Verbs," "Nari Headaches," "Namu/nan Trouble," "Items Easily Confused: Apparent Ambiguity," "Respect Language," and the like. The body of the Handbook, with its hundreds of examples, serves as a kind of reader; thirty-two verb-suffixes are illustrated in all of their forms or functions (with at least two examples of each). The book’s seven appendices introduce a wide range of Western-language material, including comprehensive information about other translations into English, French, German, and Spanish of all texts cited―especially helpful for potential comparative translation study. For those unfamiliar with the topic, the section on Orthography is a model of clarity. Throughout the Handbook,highlighted items in Japanese are printed in bright red and their romanization in dark-black small capitals, to repeat and reinforce material at both conscious and unconscious levels via complementary graphic features. The volume can be used as an introduction to classical Japanese, an initial textbook, a companion text, a review text, and/or a reference work.

I was not sure what to expect, but was very happy indeed with this reference work. It synthesises the literature that is already out there and presents it in a very accessible and intelligent way. Example sentences taken from genuine CJ texts. It immediately helped me with a translation setting me straight on mu+to suru and the range of -beshi, among other things. Very worth having.
