In this third novel (after Striking Out and Farm Team) starring Billy Baggs, the farmboy with a mean fast pitch, sparks start flying on and off the diamond when the hero locks horns with archenemy and rival ballplayer Archer "King" Kenwood. Billy has the edge during heated games against the Town Team, but victories are less certain in the romance field, with pretty Suzy Langen making plays for both boys' attention. When squabbles over Suzy turn physical, Coach Anderson puts a lid on the action by forcing Billy and King to trade lifestyles for a while. For half a week, King bunks with Billy on the Baggses farm; then it is Billy's turn to try out town life at the Kenwoods' posh house. Although the boys are not destined to become bosom buddies, they do share one serious problem: hard-nosed, close-minded fathers who try to run their lives. The stereotyped casting of rednecked farmers and uppity townsfolk compromises the book's otherwise wide appeal. Similarly, the narrative is marred by strained rural references, especially with regard to the female characters: "Compared to Suzy Langen, as tall and graceful as a show cat, the Erickson girls were scrappy, barn cats.... His eyes were welded to Gina like it was a hot Fourth of July and she was a double-scoop ice-cream cone." Ultimately, the author's portrayal of town/country rivalry is as broadly and unconvincingly sketched as legends surrounding Billy's "rocket-launcher" of an arm. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7 Up?Hard Ball can stand on its own, although it's bound to be most popular with readers of Farm Team (1995) and Striking Out (1993, both HarperCollins). It's August as Billy Baggs steams into the final game of the 1971 summer season. His farm teammates, the skinny-dipping Erickson girls, are as sassy and saucy as ever. Suzy Langen, who has been coming to the games all summer, is too perfectly beautiful for words, but willing to take some risks. And King Kenwood, the privileged star pitcher for the town team, is competitive, hostile, and determined to keep his eye on her. Billy, yanked from the game in the third inning, accompanies Suzy to the loft of the barn, where they tentatively make out. King surprises them and he and Billy explode into a fight. An old farmer dismissively comments, "Just a couple of young bucks locking horns over a doe." Their school's baseball coach, who can see his spring season going down the tubes, takes the fight a bit more seriously. He negotiates a deal with the respective parents to have each boy stay half the week at the other's house. Predictably, they begin to see and understand one another, but the process is largely believable and satisfying. The action moves quickly and the characters are worth knowing. Engaging language is occasionally lyrical. One Great Baseball Book!!

One Great Book!!! It is about a kid named Billy 14 that lived on a farm and a kid name King Kenwood that lived in town. They both are great pitchers and they both have their own baseball team. Billy's team is a farm team and King's is a town team. They both like a girl named Suzy Langen.

They go to a game to Minneapolis to watch the Twin's play. Billy really likes Suzy so he stares at her most of the game. King Kenwood likes her just as much as Billy does and asked her if she wanted to sit in the box seats instead of outside, because he has an extra ticket. Suzy says not now maybe later. Jake goes instead to the box seats. Later on in the game King Kenwood comes back up and says does anyone else want to go. Suzy got up and went down there with King to the box seats. Billy stated to stare at King and Suzy. A batter on one of the teams hits a hard line drive foul. Billy gets hit in the mouth by the ball and is sent to the hospital at the stadium. Billy's lip is really messed up and two of his teeth are broken. Billy is then taken to a the Twin's loker room. Jim Kaat a pitcher for the Twin's and puts his signature on his old glove and gives it to Billy.

Billy's mom wants to get Billy some new school clothes and his teeth fixed. The town have one more hame left on Friday. Suzy had not been to any of their games, but she went to this one. Billy and King are the starting pitchers for the night. Billy does good for awhile, but then gets bad. King on the other hand does good all the way. Billy gets pulled out and goes over to Suzy. Suzy wants a kitten Billy has many of and is trying to get rid of them. Billy and Suzy go to get a kitten. Suzy sees a swing and wants to swing on it. Suzy wants Billy do join so he does. Later on the swing breaks and they fall to the ground. They then begin to kiss each other. King Kenwood then arrives and is mad as all get out. King and Billy start to fight against each other. Suzy then calls for help and everyone comes over. The coach says if they want to play baseball for him that they have to spend a whole week together. They end up learning what it is like in other areas of someone's life. They drawl closer to being friends then they ever where, but they would never be friends. Their dads both disliked one another. Billy and King end up doing something about it and their dads become to like each other better.IF YOU LIKE BASEBALL READ THIS BOOK ITS GREAT!!!

Billy Baggs a 15-year-old kid loved baseball and as long as he could remember King Kenwood and him have been archrivals. They both play on baseball teams, Billy plays for the farm team and King plays for the town team. Billy and King both like this girl named Suzy Langen. Suzy and King had a thing for each other but then Billy broke it up. There baseball coach for next year is Mr. Anderson the high school coach. He heard that Billy and King don't really get along with each other so he makes them spend one week together. He does that because he wants them to get along better so they don't fight on the team next year. If they don't get along they don't play. But before that happened Billy and Suzy did some things to get closer and closer. You will have to read to see what that is and see if Billy and King get along better.

Some things that I liked were that the book was about baseball, and baseball is one of my favorite sports. I also liked that Billy and King had to send a week together because at some points it was pretty funny. I like that Billy and King were fighting between a girl because it was funny to see what they were going to do to get Suzy's attention. I didn't like it because some times I would lose track of what was going on. But other than that I really liked the book.

I think that anyone that likes baseball and friends would like this book because it is mostly about baseball and friendship. I thought that it was a pretty good book because it was funny and it was about baseball. So if you like those things I would read this book. If you like Matt Christopher and other sports authors I would read this book.

Everybody has a book that they like. The book I read was Hardball. I think this book was very enjoyable to read.
The start of this book begins when Billy Baggs, Mark Kenwood, and Suzy Langen go to watch a ballgame. This ballgame takes place at the home of the Minnesota Twins. At this game Billy gets hit with a ball and is given a glove from Jim Kaat a Professional baseball player.
After the three of them get home Billy and King fight over Suzy who both love. Now these two have to stay together for a week. What will happen?
Three literary elements that Will Weaver uses is the use of the climax, which is the first one. I think the use of the climax is very good because I enjoyed reading it. The climax is when Billy and Suzy make love. The second literary element is the characterization chosen by the author. I like the characters because I think they represent me. The third literary element is the plot in which the events happen. The part of the plot I like is when the kids go to the stadium. I think the way the author used the events is very good.
My opinion of this book is that this author writes very good books from reading this. I think the characters he picked were very good such as Billy Baggs. I think how King and Billy fight over a girl relates to some kids today. I hope other people read this book also.

A good reference when researching used spacecraft

Slightly biased to the Terran ships, and not 100% accurate (so removing one star), but still a good reference particularly for anyone in the market to purchase a used ship. Contained some information that was only recently de-classified, so the author clearly had some inside information.

If you like the way the Jane's books describe information about Ships, Planes, and other military equipment, then you will love this book. This book describes the origins and use of space vehicles in a Science Fiction reality, but with a twist. Instead of just talking about specifications, this books talks about the ships in the context of a historical chronology.
I first read this book as a teen with an interest in Science Fiction and detail (That is why I became a designer). A few decades later (fast forward to 2002), I finally got a copy of this book, in great condition I might add, thanks to the kind folks at ...who listed a copy for sale on Amazon.com.
The art is very good and lends so much validity to the story and history of which the various ships make. There are several books in the series (Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD is the first):

Fired my imagination as a child

I first encountered this wonderful book as a nine year old child with an eye for science fiction. I spent many months pouring over its text and imaginative paintings. As the title hints, the book is written as a 'manual' for identification of spacecraft types in wide use during the last one hundred years. The objective 'historical' writing style contributes to the readers desire to suspend disbelief and get caught up in one hundred years of war and commerce driven spacecraft design. Amazingly, the hundreds of paintings that bring the text to life are given a blanket credit to a single agency and none are given individual artist credits. All of the paintings are first rate examples of the art at the time, before George Lucas' "used universe" style would dominate the scene. I would recommend this book to any fan of science fiction.

About the Author
The late Howard F. Sugden pastored the South Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan, for many years. He previously ministered in several churches in Canada and the midwestern United States. He held a B.R.E. from the Winona Lake School of Theology and received honorary doctorates from Wheaton College and Western Baptist Seminary.

In addition to decades of writing for believers, Dr. Wiersbe has served a writer-in-residence at Cornerstone College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has pastored three churches, including Moody Church in Chicago; and has served as general director and Bible teacher for the Back to the Bible broadcast.

Excellent Book for Ministry Leaders and Pastors

What a pleasure to stumble upon this book! While the book is written to educate the new pastor, I found it quite helpful for ministry leaders too. Based on scripture, the book details the responsibilities of those who serve God's people. The main theme is to "Cultivate a servant's heart and be available," according to the authors. They begin with a lesson on pride and the humility of serving, no matter the size of your flock. They write "People who are too proud to preach to a small congregation will never preach successfully to large congregations."

Each chapter addresses a specific question in ministry. The authors unveil many aspects of pastoring, from the hiring and interview process, to serving, to handling conflict with church members or the church leadership. The message is to "Pastor the whole church, not just your admirers." According to the book, it's also important to continue growing in knowledge. "The satisfied preacher will never grow. He will become the center of a mutual-admiration society, not a source of spiritual power," writes the authors.

By the time I finished this book, I had more than 157 highlights on my Kindle. I found the content impressive and worthy of reading. It covers the basics of ministry and the target audience would be someone considering a career in ministry, not necessarily someone already serving in that role. (Though it might be a good refresher for someone burned out in ministry!) Good book choice for someone graduating from seminary school.

Good Read For All Church Leaders

Great advice, given in an easy to follow format. I always enjoy reading anything by Mr. Wiersbe because it is always easy understand. He takes foundational doctrines and presents them as simple ideas and facts and common sense approaches to many problems.

Everyone holding a position in a church should read this. It will help them in their position, but it will also help them to support their pastor.

Like most Wiersbe books, simple, easy reading of profoundly deep truths. Practical and applicable. I wish it had at least some focus on church planting or pastoring issues specific to new churches, but that is a small concession. This will become a part of my suggested bibliography for new pastors.

The work of Slatter and Lovett covers all aspects of company turnaround and can be, with some restrictions, used as a valuable help during crisis management.
This model stresses an overlap of planning and implementation activities. Crisis management and regular business planning have to be handled simultaneously and a number of generic strategies implemented parallel and vigorously, which pays contribute to the extreme time pressure in a crisis situation.
The model takes a holistic approach by including aspects of leadership and stakeholder confidence, but the author misses mechanisms that allow the flexibility for a basic strategy change as a reaction to an altering environment.
Remarkable is that the workstream of the development of the business plan only is limited to mid stage of the emergency phase. This could be an indication that in Slatter's and Lovett's concept the business plan has a rather static and inflexible structure. If writing the business plan is considered a process that constantly has to be adapted to the changing environment, then the development of the business plan should stretch over all phases of the turnaround process. Also naming the business plan the "Bible of Recovery" implies that the once developed strategies are chiseled in stone.
The static character of the business plan in this model is circumstantiated by the fact that a major element in their business plan is a description of the desired business in its end state, which sets the course of company development on fixed bearings too rigidly and does not allow it to steer around a possible storm.
Like the model of Schaffer and Thomson they constantly review the progress of development in their implementation report, which they call a dynamic living document. This is a functional and important tool to keep the turnaround momentum moving, but they use this information merely as a performance measure to analyze, improve and document the actions, which lead to the achievements of set targets and deadlines, without reflecting, if those targets or strategies are still relevant or need to be adjusted. Therefore this concept cannot fully utilize the essential learning effect, is not flexible in reformulating its strategies, if necessary, and has no mechanisms to institutionalize refinements.
There is only one small contribution in the work of Slatter and Lovett towards strategic flexibility. Under "critical situations during implementation" they mention that an initiative should be amended, if the performance analysis of the implementation report recognizes an underperformance caused by an invalid assumption. They describe this though as a rather isolated event, which has no strong influence on the overall strategic process.
The author considers one reason, why Slatter and Lovett take a more static approach towards the business plan lies in one of the general advantages of a crisis situation, which is the necessity of overlapping of planning and implementation. By this the time gap between planning and implementation is fairly short and the chances that the environment changes drastically are fairly slim although they exist, as the September 11 event showed. This statement counts for the analysis-, emergency- and strategic change phase. But since the concept of Slatter and Lovett also reach into the growth phase until company renewal has been established the author believes it should establish mechanisms, which allow for a strategic change.
The author concludes from the above, that the concept of Slatter and Lovett can be used as a valuable approach towards crisis management , if it is augmented with the constant learning and reformulating principles of Schaffer and Thomson, Pelz and other authors who state that capturing the essential learning effect should be the core achievement of a business plan.

Relaxing brain break from Sudoku.

Challenging, yet not to the point of livid frustration :-). A nice brain break from Sudoku. Clear, easy-to-understand directions. Easily readable, full page puzzles. Only con is that the last 20+ pages contain introductions to other Sudoku & brain puzzle types. Fine in the first book. But, repetitively published in every other game book by this author.

Spicy Puritans - An Outstanding Story

Wow. I wasn't quite prepared for the power or the characters and imagery of this book. To take a subject as dry as the Puritans of the 1600s and turn it into a racy, riveting drama is quite a gift. Using the real-life Winthrop family of the early 17th century, Seton spins the tale of how the Puritan group came into being and how plans were laid to create the Massachusetts Bay Company. The historical accuracy seems excellent, yet the most powerful aspect of the book is Elizabeth (aka Bess) Fones (of Winthrop blood), who is without question the most corporeal, vital, and realistic Puritan character I have ever met. The book follows her through lusty and not-so-lusty marriages, telling the story of one husband who went completely mad, and of the bloody massacres of whites by Indians AND vice-versa, and of Elizabeth's long-standing attraction to the studly and principled settler Will Hallett. Elizabeth encounters so much hardship that I began to fear for a really heartbreaking ending to the story, but Seton does a beautiful job of imbuing Elizabeth's life -- even her final days -- with meaning and spirit. I cried good tears at the end.

A Treasure From Anya Seton- Fabulous Historical Fiction

The republishing of the prodigious historical novels of Anya Seton in the first decade of this century brings to light the treasure trove encompassed in her work.

Winthrop Women, first published in 1958 and later released in 2006 is a particular gift for those whose interests lie in the history of the Puritans, the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the early settlement of the environs of Greenwich, Connecticut. Above all, it is a great love story and the saga of a strong and independent woman richly entwined in the region's history.

Winthrop Women embraces a broad historical web, set in the 1600s (1617-1655) centered around the family of John Winthrop, a fanatical practitioner of the Puritan faith who became the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and his rebellious niece and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Fons. Their descendents remain in Connecticut and throughout New England. Seton tells the Winthrop family and Elizabeth Fons' story in three parts: The early years in England living a near aristocratic lifestyle; the great Puritan migration to the New World with the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; Elizabeth's banishment from Massachusetts and her emergence in Greenwich, Connecticut with husbands (correct) , lovers and children joining in the journey!

Anya Seton's story of Elizabeth is written in " high-definition." From childhood, "Bess" is of independent thought and passionate in her views. She was born on a collision course with the beliefs of her Puritan elders, especially John Winthrop. Long before boarding the ship Lyon for the journey to the New World, this child of luxury and high social status had established herself as the Fons' and Winthrop family non-conformist.

Proudly leading his flock beneath the banner of religious freedom to the colonies in New England, far away from the dictates of King Charles, Cromwell and the ruling British establishment, John Winthrop becomes a zealot and religious tyrant, ruling over his domain, with a wrathful "God" as his enforcer.

Elizabeth's ever complicated life, saturated with her passion for men and her non-conformist beliefs, provides the framework for an abundant tableau of what life and love was like in 1630s New England. The drudgery of daily survival, the absence of luxuries, disease and Indians both friend and foe. Foremost, the woman's role of being, above all, a necessary "good breeder," upon which the future of the faith and the colony itself depended!

Elizabeth, having fallen in love with John Winthrop's son, her cousin Henry, became pregnant and was hastily married before leaving England! Henry, a kindred free spirit was not traveling with Elizabeth on the ship Lyon but was under his father's supervision on the Arabella. Elizabeth learned upon her arrival in Massachusetts that Henry had drowned in a boating accident upon landing. There would be two more husbands and many children, living and still-born before her story concludes thirty years later.

During a brief period when Winthrop had been ousted as Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor, the community rose up against Elizabeth's behavior with rumors and speculation that she and her Indian servant Telaka were possessed by the devil. The outcry became witchcraft! Banishment from the colony, the final solution in those days short of hanging, saw Elizabeth, her family and Telaka ( whom Elizabeth had rescued from a slave auction) on their way to Greenwich where under Dutch law there was greater respect for individual freedom and religious beliefs. This novel is so wonderfully written and researched that of course, Telaka, had ended up in Boston only after being kidnapped from her tribe, the Siwanoy Indians who populated the area in and around Greenwich! A homecoming for Telaka and a new most welcoming home for Elizabeth, her husband and brood? Not quite that simple!

In the Greenwich chapters you will walk with Elizabeth on the white beaches of Monakewago ( Tods Point), follow the Mianus River, witness the massacre of over 1000 Siwanoy Indians ( Telaka's family) in what is today Cos Cob. There will be yet another husband and more "breeding, " and another banishment with the loss of thousands of acres of land that today encompass the entire Town of Greenwich.

History is taught in many ways and Seton is deserving of high praise both as a novelist and historian for Winthrop Women. Seton wrote Winthrop Women while living in Old Greenwich, Connecticut where she died in 1990 at age 86. She is buried there in Putnam cemetery.

SHAME on YOU AMAZON! The Book - 5 Stars. The Editing - 0 Stars.

This great classic doesn't require a review from me on how well it was researched or written. Elizabeth Winthrop is one of our country's "Foremothers" and her story was well-told by Anya Seaton. Whether or not you enjoy it may have more to do with the kinds of books you like than its actual worth. It was written in the late fifties and as I recall, when my older sister read it in the early sixties, it was considered quite a racy book. Well, in today's world it is pretty tame, but still an excellent story.

I rarely criticize Kindle books for their editing because there are so many first time authors that I give them a pass. I just want to have a chance to read what they have to say. And though I read many indie books that have editing issues I have NEVER seen such a badly edited book in my life! Considering that the original was well-edited, I feel that republishing an existing classic and charging almost $8 for such a lousy Kindle version with no value added is an absolute crime.

The book was obviously scanned and published with NO editing at all. Anybody who has even minimal experience with scanning-to-text would realize that the software doesn't always interpret the scan correctly and if you don't edit it there will be whole sentences that have so many mistakes that they make no sense. This was the case with the Kindle version of The Winthrop Woman. Saying that they did a poor job editing is to give them too much credit. If anybody even read through this book before publishing it they must have been illiterate.

SHAME ON YOU AMAZON for selling such a trashy piece of publishing!!!
