We're homeschooling our daughters and even though we've made a strong/in-depth science curriculum for our third grader, these workbook along with the textbook are great choices for either use it as core science curriculum or as supplemental guide as we are using it. I think it covers what any kid should know in third grade. How much in depth you want to get in it's up to the teacher or the homeschool parent.

Fantastic characters but the writing didn't deliver

I had, if not high expectations, then at least decent expectations for this book, given previous ratings and reviews. However, I was sadly disappointed. I have to start by saying that I absolutely loved the characters. They were quirky, fun, and wonderfully flawed. Even the plot was interesting - two families with significant supernatural powers have each apparently lost someone in a mysterious helicopter crash. Computer geek Conan (yes, that is apparently his name) and feng shui expert extraordinaire what's-her-name (that's bad...I just finished the book last night and can't remember her name already?!) come together to solve the mystery. The book is billed as a romance but while the characters do get together I really just didn't feel the romance vibe throughout the story. There was so much reliance on the first book in this series that I was constantly distracted trying to fill in the blanks that the story felt extremely choppy to me. There was so much subtle, ironic humor smattered throughout that I was also very distracted by having to reread sentences and paragraphs trying to catch what I missed. A decent plot with great characters, but the writing just didn't deliver for me.

Well written and intriguing

I love Patricia Rice Malcolm books, so when she offered the opportunity for reviewers to request ARCs, I requested it on the spot. And overall, I am glad I did.

At first, I had a bit problem with the fact that it was set in California, since I associate it with Georgian England. But once that passed, I enjoyed exploring California with Dorrie and Conan. The settings felt believable. From Conan's beach house to their trip to the Mojave desert. One thing I appreciated was that Ms Rice clearly showed that California is a geologically active state, and let that affect both Dorrie's and Conan's lives.

I enjoyed following Dorrie's and Conan's search for their brothers. At first glance, they look like they have nothing in common. Dorrie is Irish-Chinese, and believes in the paranormal. Conan is a bit more sceptical about the paranormal, and wants solid facts. But as the story developed, they gradually realised that they complemented each other. I loved watching Dorrie reclaiming her life with Conan at her side.

The search for their brothers were fast paced, and I loved how both Dorrie and Conan were a part of it ( Nothing frustrates me more than when the heroine is just waiting on the sidelines).

The biggest problem I had with this story was connecting with the characters, but that might be because I read it in December, but forgot to review it. So I had to re-read it a month later or so, and I still remembered what happened.

Magical romance

In Rice's contemporary romance novel, Dorothea Franklin's life is a little off center at the moment. Her father is an invalid and she is drawn to doing anything to prevent her brother from dying in a helicopter crash.

In search of the truth, she turns to computer expert Conan Oswin because his brother died under similar circumstances. Dorothea didn't feel the vibrations of her brother's death and when she reveals that fact to Conan, he wants to dismiss the notion but his instincts are strong and his senses are already on full alert looking for trouble that might be coming their way.

A well written story that is very detail oriented with a dynamite plot, plenty of magic and likeable characters.

Excellent One-Stop Reference For Non-Professionals

I got a prerelease copy to peruse, and I am quite impressed by the work that Mr. Ozer has put into describing the many different considerations involved in creating quality audio/video presentations.

The book is definitely written for nonprofessionals, which should be clear from the title. This is for people using webcams and smartphone or tablet built-in cameras to present themselves. If you have access to a professional video studio with broadcast-quality video cameras, you are operating in a different world and need different technical advice.

Mr. Ozer uses clearly-labeled chapters to introduce each aspect of videocasting. You can easily jump to a topic of interest or go back to look up something as a refresher. Within each chapter there is a brief backgrounder for people unfamiliar with the topic, some basic definitions to make sure you understand the terminology and concepts used, and then practical tips and advice.

This book is different than some others I have seen, in that it not only covers best practices for on-camera presenters, but also delves into hardware, software, and internet connectivity considerations. Mr. Ozer talks about different types of computing devices, webcams, microphones, and goes into details of setup and operation within several popular web conferencing and video conferencing technologies. He even takes the time to break out differences in operation between Windows and Macintosh operating systems when they are noteworthy.

The writing style is conversational and personal. Mr. Ozer writes in the first person and demonstrates the importance of production choices with personal anecdotes and cautionary tales. He also illustrates concepts with explanatory graphics and photographs.

Obviously Mr. Ozer cannot review and compare every available camera, light, computing platform, microphone, and conferencing product on the market. But he uses enough representative examples so that you will understand how to compare and select equipment and software that is right for your needs and your budget.

If you want to put yourself in the best light (figuratively and literally) on your next video webcast, get this book. If you are responsible for administering or producing your company's webcasts, get this book. It's a great one-stop reference for a topic that can be confusing or overwhelming to newcomers.

The Definitive Book for Webcam Users

It's mission critical for professionals to understand to understand how to look their best whether it's presenting a webinar, making a Google Hangouts guest appearance on a streaming interview show or, simply making a professional Skype call. This book is easily understood. The tips and picture comparisons due to production circumstances are great.
This book will be introduced to my University Digital Media Editing class in the Fall '15 semester.
It's good to see a book in sync with the accelerated use of technology applications.
