Professor Stakhov has written a book that may well change not only the way we view the history of mathematics, but the future development of mathematics in its application to the natural sciences and computer design. This book is the result of the author's four decades of research in the field of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Mean (also called the Golden Ratio or the Golden Section) and their applications. The volume contains chapters on the history of mathematics, the generalized Fibonaccis and Lucas numbers, the generalized golden proportions, the golden algebraic equations, the generalized Binet formulas, Fibonacci and golden matrices, and hyperbolic models. Stakhov suggests applications of number systems (Bergman's numeral system) with irrational radices in computers, coding theory, cryptography and mobil phone design, because irrational numbers are nothing else than commands for mathematical operations in space and time, see Where Mathematics Comes From: How the Embodied Mind Brings Mathematics into Being.

Stakhov, of Russian and Ukrainian background, now living in Toronto, Canada, is an outstanding member of a minority of scientists, who has realized that the Golden Mean and its expression through Pascal's Triangle, Fibonacci and Lucas Number lies at the very center of the creative principle of nature itself. Recent scientific developments in physics, chemistry and cosmology have refocused attention to the mathematical properties of the Golden Mean and its meaning on the macrocosmic and microcosmic levels.

However, no scientific work can ever be complete: Stakhov is not aware of some developments in theoretical chemistry by Jan Boeyens, see Number Theory and the Periodicity of Matter and Chemistry from First Principles, supporting the fundamental role of the golden mean. Also the book A New Kind of Science is full of Pascal's Triangles!

Until now, from my point of view "From Golden Mean to Chaos" (printed in Argentina and, it is a pity, not on offer by amazon.com) by Vera de Spinadel is or was the most advanced book on the importance of the Golden Mean. Stakhov cites this book, but does not refer to renormalization and the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theorem, in which the Golden Mean plays a role, too.

Until now, our brains and computers have a quite different architecture. However, by encoding and decoding the information entropy of a system no other wave could be more optimal than a wavelet containing the Golden Mean and its mathematics itself. Indeed, based on empirical data, the paper "The golden mean as clock cycle of brain waves", published in Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 18 (2003) 643-652, suggests that our brain uses these advantages of "The Mathematics of Harmony"! And already Roopun, A. K. et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2 (2008) 145-154, confirmed empirically this conclusion of the substantial role of the Golden Mean in our processing of information. Does our brain even work on the basis of a Ternary Mirror-Symmetrical Numeral System, as invented by Stakhov?

A magnificent book

As a child I read "Dr Posin's Giants- men of science" and found it inspirational. As an adult I read this book by Stakhov and I am bewildered - How did I overlook this book when it was first printed? This book is a masterful exploration of history and the essence of mathematical reasoning...by a master of the subjects.

Thanks you, Professor Stakhov, for a marvelous contribution in this discipline.

About the Author
M. Gordon Hunter is Professor of Information Systems in the Faculty of Management at The University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Gordon has previously held academic positions at universities in Canada, Singapore, and Hong Kong. He has held visiting positions at universities in Australia, Monaco, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.S. During July and August of 2005 Gordon was a Visiting Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Felix B Tan is Professor of Information Systems and Chair of Business Information Systems discipline at Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand). He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Information Management. He is on the Executive Council and is Fellow of the Information Resources Management Association. He was also on the Council of the Association for Information System between 2003-2005. Dr. Tan s current research interests are in electronic commerce, global information management, business-IT alignment, and the management of IT. Dr. Tan has published in MIS Quarterly, Information & Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, IEEE Transactions on Personal Communications, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, as well as other journals and refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Tan has over 25 years experience in information systems management and consulting with large multinationals, as well as university teaching and research in Singapore, Canada, and New Zealand.

"the last time I saw my Mom...."

Mr. Guirgis wrote a very personal introduction to this play where he informs us that between the beginning and ending of writing this play, his mother got sick and died. He explains his frustration with critics who said that this play was about his life - he answers them by saying it is about "our lives" and that he will also try to not read into other writers' work with an autobiographical detective bent (event though he has been guilty of it before).

The play is centered around Therese Marie, who is old and sick, and her children Danny and Justina. Danny struggles with substance abuse, while Justina is doing well in her career and resents both her Mom and brother a bit because of their various dependency issues. Theresa's long dead, deaf, drunken-Irish, child-beating father makes multiple appearances in the form of a ghost.

My favorite characters are those on the periphery - the nurse, the orderly and the doctor. All of them appear brisk at times, but they are all competent, hard working and mean well. The scenes with them are the strongest, as well as funniest.

Planning the weekend?

I wish I had this book many, many weekends ago. When co-workers ask me on Monday mornings, "What did you do this weekend," my mind races to think of something--anything--that sounds remotely interesting. I often just shrug in reply, "Nothing much. Just hung out." It's then when I get this vague, dreaded sense that I'd just wasted the weekend.

It sounds counterintuitive but--I would have to agree with the author--weekends are more fulfilling if they are planned, even if just informally. This provides a much better shot of actually accomplishing, visiting, or experiencing something meaningful.

This short book is packed with great ideas to maximize the precious time off many of us have each week. It's not about cramming as much as possible into each weekend, but provides techniques to help spend time wisely. My favorite chapter has to be "All There Is." Without giving too much away, it drives home the message that the time and energy we have is all we're going to get--so use it wisely, and don't waste it, because you can never get it back.

$2.99? For this??!!!

Before I say anything about this e-booklet, I just want to say that I loved, loved 168 Hours. It was useful, well researched and it was more or less a newish concept. And I kept rereading bits and pieces for a while and implementing some tips in my life.

And because I loved that book so much, I kept reading this author.

I read her blog for a while, then I read her next book "All the Money in the World" - which appeared to be put together in a hurry so I did not really enjoy that, but again, because I loved 168 Hours, I decided to buy this one for $2.99 and see what it is about and while I was reading (took me 30 minutes to read the whole thing - it is so short, most bloggers offer such e-books for free!) I felt really angry. Yes, I know 2.99 isn't a huge amount of money, but this book offers nothing new at all. You should plan your weekends, you should get up and do things, and then it gives you a few examples of supposedly successful people who do the same. Really? And I paid for this???

There isn't even an exciting new premise, at least she had something like that in "All the Money", i.e. you need more, earn more don't try to save more, etc.

I felt really cheated, completely, I'd say, if this book was 0.99 it would still be expensive for what it is.

I hate giving any book one star, in fact, I don't usually finish reading books that I dislike so much, but this one was so offensively short, it was easy to finish and I guess I was hoping I'd find something worth my money. I didn't.

Great book to help you take back your non-work life

A very good book, now I just need to start following the principles outlined in the book :-). If you are a person dedicated to you worklife and worried about getting burnt out, then this is a good book for you. if you have a hard time setting work aside then it is also the book for you. If you weekends go by too quickly and you wonder where they went, or what you've done with your time, then yes this is the book for you.

Finally a good cut to the chase software devlopment book

A great book, although a bit smaller then most UML books, this is one of those instances that quality definitely came out on top over quantity.

The first section reviews UML in general, what the symbols are and when and how to use them.

Section two is the real meat of the book, showing what every person wanting to learn programming always has a problem with, and usually turns out to be that turning point where they give up learning to program. Its not the learning of a language syntax and its nuances that is the real challenge of learning to program (although at times . . .). It is trying to come up with an application or object oriented script that fits a need you must address, and then the process of figuring out how you should build it from an OO point of view. Section two has 2 chapters. Each has an example of taking a high level idea and breaking it down using the "Bridge" method used in this book, until you finally have a complete UML class diagram. At which point you can then start your coding in the OO language of your choice.

Section three is more or less a repeat of section two only the answers and examples are not provided for you. Section 3 is a set of exercises. Concepts of applications (customer requirements doc) are provided and you do the UML designs.

Section 2 though is where all the real action is at.

I give this book 4 stars and not 5 because of two things:

I. An authors version of the answers to section 3 are not provided to you for comparison to the results you come up with after going through exercise.

II. The UML used in this book is still based on UML 1.x and not 2.x. This book is great but screams for a second edition written with UML 2.x in mind.
