Lacking in Depth

The marketing jargon at the back of the book gives little insights into what this book really contains inside, although it certainly oversells it with the promise that it "has everything you need to transform your perspective on portrait photography". This makes it sound like the book is somehow an instructional text, when in fact, most of the book is basically a collection of blog-entry-like segments where an image or two is presented, along with some text describing the shoot and some extremely superficial notes about post processing.

First the good parts. The book begins with a series of articles about approaching portraiture, where Dybisz describes many different aspects of portrait photography, focusing a lot on the different creative considerations. For me, this was by far the best chapter in the book. There are some interesting ideas presented here, although there is not a lot of depth. I was hoping the entire book would be like this, except with more detailed discussions and more image analysis to support the text.

The bulk of the book basically contains what amounts to blog entries about particular photos in "Miss Aniela's" portfolio. You'll see a two-page spread that contains an image or two (and perhaps some 'behind the scenes' shots), as well as text that describes what Dybisz wanted to achieve, and thoughts about the shoot itself. None of this is particularly instructional, and at its best was only mildly interesting. The text about the shoot is usually followed by extremely superficial segments about post-processing.

Frankly, I thought everything written about post-processing in this book was completely useless. Nobody is going to get anything out of a sentence that tells you that a levels/curves adjustment or a hue/saturation adjustment was used. Beginners won't know what that means, and experienced Photoshop users would yawn at how obvious it would be that these basic adjustments would be used in the production of images. I found it a bit tiresome to read about two techniques that keep showing up over and over again (and equally superficially each time): HDR (via Photomatix), and compositing. Of course, you won't learn how to do these techniques in the text (and clearly it wasn't meant to), although it's kind of silly that the text even goes to the trouble of telling you that you need to bracket images for HDR, or describes basically obvious stuff about what you need to make a composite. You'll either know how to do these techniques or not before reading this text, and in either case, you won't get anything out of it.

Oddly stuck in near the end of this book is a chapter presenting images and writing from other artists. There's some background information on the photographer, and some thoughts on his/her work, and then some random stories and images from each person. This chapter felt like filler material and wasn't really joined well with any particular theme or idea.

The book closes with a chapter on growing as a photographer. This short, but useful chapter returned back to the higher content quality that the book started with. Dybisz shares useful tips and ideas ranging from studying photography, to developing a style and working with models.

In general, I'd say this was a disappointing book. Outside of the first and last chapter, the book has very little real content. If you were to read this book, after reading those two chapters, I'd recommend you just flip through the rest of it as a coffee table book.

The awesome Miss Aniela strikes back

Short Version:
This is an awesome and inspiring book with tons of great images and behind the scenes look at Natalie's work. A great purchase at a great price.

Long Version:
The book goes through the process of creating some of Natalie's recent work which is mostly fashion oriented. Skimming through her website and blog, you can get a feel of what to expect in term of images. You can also feel how Natalie matured as a photographer and writer since her last book about self portraiture. I particularly liked the chapter of Artist Showcase where some great photographers (some of which I'm familiar with) share the process behind their images. You feel that this chapter is not just another page filler but perfectly complements the rest of the book. Although some of the images rely on post processing and manipulation in Photoshop, don't expect this book to show you how it was done in PS (there are tons of other books that show you how to work in layers or do tricks in great detail). Natalie only tells you what she used and why she used it. Many of the images are accompanied by a behind the scene image or before manipulation in PS so you can see how it was created. The great thing about most of the images or Natalie's work in general is that it doesn't rely on having tons of lighting or top of the line equipment. The most important thing is to have a good concept and knowing how to put all the elements together (model, makeup, props, light, post-processing). In summary, this book is a great purchase at a great price and for sure a keeper in my photography library and I will for sure refer to it again and again for inspiration.

Don't Buy the Kindle Version

The images on the Kindke version are extremely low quality, they can't be viewed when enlarge to full screen on an iPad Mini. Aside from Natalie telling us she uses Photoshop, there are no other insights provided for how she goes about compositing her images. Needless to say I was very disappointed.

A MUST READ FOR ALL U.S. CITIZENS!

In While We Still Have Time: The Perils Of Electronic Voting Machines And Democracy's Solution: Publicly Observed, Secure Hand-Counted Paper Ballots (HCPB) Elections Dr. Sheila Parks makes a very compelling (but scary) argument, backed up with lots of convincing evidence, showing that ALL electronic voting machines are susceptible to fraud and demonstrating that many have been tampered with in recent elections.

This book is an absolute MUST READ for all citizens who are concerned that ALL votes are counted as cast. Dr. Parks shows that it is impossible to prove that electronic voting machines used in elections have NOT been tampered with. Her book is a chilling reminder that all ordinary citizens must continue to be actively involved in the political process if we want to avoid the demise of our democracy. The most precious right we have as citizens is the right to vote and have each vote be counted as intended.

I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read, and includes many practical steps to take to advocate for publicly-observed, secure, hand-counted paper ballots (HCPB) elections. Several chapters provide case studies of four precincts in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. These case studies are based on Parks' observations in real time of elections being counted by hand, and demonstrate that it is actually cheaper, faster, and safer to run HCPB elections than to run elections using voting machines, which cost between $3K to $5K per machine, not counting the cost to store, maintain, and upgrade them regularly-- or the cost to our democracy of having votes stolen!

Parks is an expert on the topic of HCBP elections. In fact, her research since 2000 has impelled her to put forth protocols to implement HCPB elections nationwide (see the last chapter)-- but we must first get our elections supervisors to see the importance of doing so! To aid in that endeavor, in the Introduction Parks provides a two-page list of concrete actions that can be taken by ordinary citizens.

This is too important an issue for American citizens to sit on their hands over. We must insist and demand by every way we can imagine that our government stop using electronic voting machines now and forever -- and While We Still Have Time provides much useful information and guidance in doing so. For instance, in it, Parks points out that the United States could learn a lesson from The Netherlands and Ireland: both countries have already eliminated electronic voting machines, and Ireland actually sold all of their machines as scrap!

I highly recommend that you read this book and share it with your friends, family, and colleagues. We must not sit back and watch while our elections are rigged!

There is nearly no attention being paid, anywhere, to the most obvious of reasons for a shift to the extreme right world wide. People do not want wars for profit; they do not want to abandon their fellow citizens to the fates when they are homeless, jobless, and sick; they do not want to be made sick by a polluted environment; they do not want to live by the whim of corporate rule. Yet we see this clear shift and cannot understand the disconnect.

In fact, I would not want to rely on electronic voting to honestly count my vote, even if there were never any theft taking place. I don't want a system that would allow such theft to occur ever. The fact that it could happen is enough to eschew them and vote in the only way that makes sense. Vote by hand on a paper ballot, count that ballot with others at the voting precinct on the night of the vote, and make it as public and open as can be.

Sheila says she has witnessed 1000 votes being counted by twelve people, with a complicated ballot, and checked as well, in four hours. Done. Safe. Impossible to mess with because the result is immediately out there. All on the up and up. Do you want to get complicated with a process that is, after all, anonymous, unlike other computer transactions that we perform every day? We cannot track our vote, so we have to assiduously track the process. We can always see if the bank made a mistake. But never with our vote. Because it is anonymous. There are a thousand good reasons why hand counting paper ballots would benefit our nation and the world. Sheila Parks explains those reasons and makes it seem eminently doable.

I love computers. I have programmed them since 1963. But they are being used to steal our elections. They pose inherent, unacceptable risks to our election processes.
 
Dr. Sheila Parks is a staunch advocate for a solution to these risks. She founded the Center for Hand-Counted Paper Ballots in Boston, and her new book: "While We Still Have Time, the Perils of Electronic Voting Machines and Democracy's Solution:  Publicly Observed, Secure Hand-Counted Paper Ballots (HCPB) Elections" is essential. Dr. Parks is a tireless and fierce advocate for accurate and secure elections. She documents the proven fact that any type of computer used for voting can be and has been hacked, resulting in fraudulent reports of vote totals and stolen elections. Both DRE's (touch-screen voting machines) and optical scanners that read paper ballots are implicated. No foolproof procedures or technologies exist that can secure the votes cast or counted on these machines. The gold standard to ensure that votes are counted as cast is hand-counted paper ballots (HCPB), using procedures already well established in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
 
This topic is extraordinarily complex. Yet on every page, Dr. Parks' intense devotion to democracy and to our country shines through. She presents facts, plus a great admiration for other activists, and even poetry. Her extensive notes are a comprehensive reference to Election Integrity literature. I am not aware of any other single source that provides so many references and links to document this issue.

too good to be bad?

I received this book for an honest review.
Olivia is a good girl who is working for her step father's company the summer before heading off to college. Figuring she's getting a head start on others with an internship pre-college she's excited that is until she finds out who her boss will be. Kaleb is a womanizing bad boy tasked with a project as a way to show is father he can one day take over the company, the issue is he's not sure he ever wants to run the company. What he is sure of is he does want the hot little intern his father assigned him, the only issue? She's his step sister....
This was a fun quick little read. I enjoyed Kaleb attitude and controlling personality and Olivia is sweet and endearing. My criticisms is that there are editing issues and that the flow between some of the scenes was a little rough. This is not a standalone and is part one in a series.

This was a sexy, hot story - especially if you like those of the step-sibling variety. They are not my favorite stories but this one was pretty good overall. This is part one of a series so you will need to read more to get the whole story.

Wasn't to bad but it did seam to stop in a few places but other then that it was a good short part 1. Olivia worked her whole life to get into Yale but when the letter came she felt her whole life went down the drain, until her stepmother came and comfort her on her misery. Caleb is you typical bad boy/jock but being a son of a multi millionaire and the heir to the fortune and business he didn't want anything but the money. When his sister needs a comforting hand he didn't expect the response that he got from his body or the thoughts that starting to spring up. Olivia and Kaleb will discover their true feelings towards one another.

Dr. Michael Spreitzenbarth holds a degree of doctor of engineering in IT security from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and is a CISSP as well as a GMOB. Disappointing

I was really looking forward to this title and put it on my short list to read as soon as it came out. Unfortunately it appears to have been released prematurely. This book would be more appropriately titled "An Introduction to Using Python for Forensics" and unfortunately falls far short of any Mastery. To be sure, there is a lot of of good gems in here if you aren't familiar with using Python to support digital investigations but the authors' writing style is so terse that you end up with nothing more than a highlight in most cases. Another key drawback is that there are critical topics missing. The most glaring of these is that there is no coverage of using Python to analyze Windows file systems. Inodes for Linux are covered but nothing on NTFS or FAT file systems for instance.

There is definitely some useful information in here if you are just learning to leverage Python for forensics examinations so a worthwhile read if you are that. If you have used Python as part of investigations already then the price probably isn't worth the material.

Covering several IT forensics topics, allowing reader to go to developing his/her own scripts

I enjoyed to link the topics covered using fully python scripting oriented approach developed in this book.
However, you already need to have experience in computer forensics and understand main concepts to be able to implement provided methods. Python learning curve is outstanding fast and most of the readers will be able to address common forensics, including mobile forensics cases by only applying provided scripts and referenced libraries.
As for all python books, tutorials and available code, the reader will have to, when feeling confortable with provided code, adapt the code to his own needs. Now that The Sleuthkit provides python modules, and with help of the covered C-types, forensics practitioners will have a real added value toolset to solve ad-hoc challenges.
