Models of the Mind: A Psychoanalytic Theory (Phoenix Books), by John E. Gedo, Arnold Goldberg

In an effort to expand the clinical theory of psychoanalysis, John E. Gedo and Arnold Goldberg delineate and order the various generally accepted systems of psychological functioning, considered here as "models of the mind." The authors provide a historical review of four major models of the mind: the topographic model, the reflex arc model, the tripartite model, and an object relations model. They then investigate the possible hierarchical interrelationships of such models. Each model is shown to represent a different facet of mental functioning and is thus employable on an ad hoc basis. The models are shown not to cancel on another out but to allow for theoretical complementarity.

Gedo and Goldberg apply their theory to four classic psychoanalytic case studies to demonstrate its effectiveness: Freud's Rat Man, his Wolf Man, the case of Daniel Paul Schreber, and a case of arrested development. For each of these cases the authors show how it would have been both possible and advantageous to apply a variety of different theories as facts about each continued to accumulate.

Just unbelievable, as time goes by ...

When I was a kid psychoanalisis was all (I have now 60). Not only for the mind, but for anything with human relief or meaning. Living with it was a little frightening (in terms of liberty, in terms of the pleausure of life itself, in terms of right to think, and sometimes, if you wish, simply not to think. Perhaps just enjoy art, or love, or some mild or medium sin) to have any significant emotion. All could be interpreted under psy.

Psychoanalysis PSY had the power, in that time, to accuse you, in reason any of your acts, of the most horrid depravaty and corruption, with any right to answer (also when you were nice!, perhaps even more! -- if you were truly nice.). His prestige made posible to carry on lengthy psychoanalitic 'interventions' without any end at sight, without any goal offered or defined. Even more, if the pacient didn`t improve or heal, well ... was his fault only.

But Time has passed. When young (18-20 years) PSY occupied nearly 100% of certain psychiatric magazines, and was the bulk of psychiatric written opinion. Including neurobiologist --in that epoch (the 60-70s)-- when requiring a clinical reference, used some sort of PSY theory (in what part of the brain we find the ID ir the ego, etc. etc.). Today, all that has gone. Now, and on the last years (80's and after) psychiatric magazines don't publish psy papers, they are not written, his university presence is only rethoric and speculative, his opinion usually nor is requested, searched or listened, has lost nearly all his previous intellectual respect and status. Lacan, the last night for fireworks, has passed, and with him any hope of coming back.

Psy still remains in corners around psychotherapy, where other contenders also have been inept in fulfilling what psy couldn't do either. A great number of disciplines around psy make their best efforts in pro of a sound psychotherapy, without any robust or clear success. Generally not worst, but also not better.

By all these considerations this book --CAN, and SHOULD BE-- of interest. A psychoanalitic "theory" of mind! That is outrageous and surprising.

Has no sense at all, to guess or predict, how the problem is undertake or solved, in this or any PSY text, but you can be sure that it shall be done in no clear or solid way. Details in the lecture can be of great interest, in viewing errors and fallacies, tricks and traps; in understanding analysis and argumentation going wrong, in methaexamining of justification and theoritical correct construction. Phorensic Epistemology.

In other words a book that must be read for any interested in the problems of understanding and knowing of the mind and connected problems. Indispensable lecture. Of course, also entertaining. Even, if you have the gift ... funny and instructive, at the highest level.
