Not what I was looking for.

The major drawback of this book from my standpoint is that all of the Phoenician samples have been transliterated into the Hebrew alphabet. I'm not sure whether this was the original intent of the author or was a later cost-saving measure on the part of the publisher. Thus there is a peculiar section on "The Alphabet" which in fact never presents a single Phoenician character. Aside from this problem, the treatment appears to be straightforward and thorough, although I didn't keep the book long enough to find out just how clear the explanations are. You might find this book of use if you are interested strictly in comparative linguistics, or perhaps travelling back in time and conversing with some Phoenicians. But for reading Phoenician inscriptions, it is of quite limited utility.

I'm very pleased with this book - my only disappointment is that the Hebrew alphabet, rather than the Phoenician, was used for the Phoenician vocabulary items, but this is not a major hurdle.

Seminal Book on Big Data

A seminal book which takes the reader beyond the fancy term of "Big Data" and clearly elicits how big data can transforms today's enterprises to better serve its customers. The book provides food for thought for readers from different backgrounds. Business leaders and analyst would find Use cases provided in Chapter 3 interesting as it suggests applications for big data in various industries. Architecture patterns in chapter 5 along with modelling and implementation techniques using NoSql, specific solutions like Hadoop, in-memory grids etc would appeal to technologist. Chapter 9 discusses in depth about the skills which needs to be acquired to become a data scientist.

Having worked and consulted in BFSI, I was able to correlate with the specific use cases provided for the financial industry. The book made me rethink how I would have implemented some of the solutions we had developed years back if we had know about these techniques/ technologies.

Introduction to visualization techniques, in chapter 9, highlights when a particular visualization (bar chart, scatter plot etc) can be used.

The book has personally given me a different perspective on how to view / structure our business data. By applying the techniques suggested we might be able to; solve our customer needs better; build simple and more effective solutions.

A long long talk about Big Data opportunities for the non tech savvy.

I did not like the book, I'm honest. And I did not like it for a couple of reasons. First, this book targets those interested in the business aspects of Big Data, and I'm not among them; second, even if I were, I don't really feel that enlighten by this title. It's a big long talk about the opportunities Big Data offers and its implications on the enterprise budget.

It's a big talk.

As the authors suggest, Big Data Imperatives can be broadly divided into three parts:

Part 1, chapters one to three, is a speech about the traditional approaches to data management and their failure to handle Big Data. The discussion then moves to the opportunities and costs it presents to the enterprise. Here the authors provide real use cases, such as retail, insurance and telecommunications.

Chapters four to six included represent instead the second part of the book. Here the focus is to find which technologies better suit the needs of the company. The talk starts with the evolution of databases. Concepts like read/write ratio, consistency and sharding make their appearance. Their impact on data analysis is also explored.

The last chapters of the book, seven to nine, cover the technologies available for developing and implementing Big Data analytics. The discussion is again centered around the inefficiency of RDBMs to satisfy the stakeholders needs. The talk quickly moves to noSQL, Hadoop and Map/Reduce.

The figure of the data scientist is the subject of the last chapter. The magic the business can expect from this divine person is described with exhaustive details.

Finally, a note about the many schemas present in the book. I must admit that the authors dedicated much time to the details of each image in the book. Kudos to their quality. Still, each comes with lots of text. When I say lots I mean they are really overly populated with text, which decreases their added value.

Content is good, but the quality of the printing could be better.

The content strikes a good balance between the business and technical perspective. Unfortunately, the print quality is poor, and don't be fooled by the color graphics in the Amazon preview. When this arrived on the book shelves at the school as a text book (regular, full price), the graphics were B&W and not always clear due to the smaller than usual page size. What gives, Apress? My students were not happy campers.

Mystic, enigmatic writings

"The Lords and the New Creatures" is a collection of poetry by Jim Morrison, who was lead singer of The Doors. The book is divided into two sections: "The Lords: Notes on Vision," and "The New Creatures." This is one of those intriguing books that I by chance picked off the shelf in a bookstore and just began reading there in the aisle; I found Morrison's work so engrossing that within a few minutes I knew I had to buy the book and explore it more deeply.
The first division of the book is dominated by prose poems. This portion of the book is a combination of mystical/philosophical treatise and cultural criticism, often supplemented with historical references; here Morrison sounds like the love child of William Blake and Roland Barthes. The second part of the book consists largely of free verse and is more enigmatic; with its sometimes nightmarish imagery, "The New Creatures" strikes me as Morrison's own personal Book of Revelation.
An important theme in this book is the archetypal city: "a ring of death / with sex at its center." Morrison also writes about the alchemist, the voyeur, and other figures. Much of the book deals with the motion picture as both art and cultural institution. Throughout the book are hallucinogenic swirls of cross-cultural references and allusions: Yoga, the assassin Oswald, hermaphroditism, the Christian trinity, Tarot cards, ventriloquism, lynching, etc.
In "The Lords and the New Creatures," Morrison seems to be trying to attain a unified vision/theory that encompasses both modern technology and humanity's mythic heritage. His poetic language is often quite startling. This is a remarkable volume by an artist who is himself an iconic figure in 20th century pop culture.

Let me tell you about surrealism and the lost god."For those who are sincere to themsleves and can dig deep into the soul, you could indeed capture the poetry in which life is all about. Poetry gives life form, most people see poetry as a series of rhyming words. They have got it all wrong. Jim explored the world not as how he would of wanted it to be, but the way this world already is. Some people show ignorance in the disorder that we are sorrounded with, Jim didn't. He was a poet of truth, that's what Jim tells us in this book.

About the Author
Adam W. Hoover received a B.S. in Computer Engineering in 1992, a M.S. in Computer Engineering in 1993, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science & Engineering in 1996, all from the University of South Florida. In 1996, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California, San Diego, as an Assistant Project Scientist and Visiting Lecturer. In 1998, he received the department's Honorary Graduate Teaching Award. In 1999, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Clemson University, where he is currently an Associate Professor. Dr. Hoover is an active Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and co-founder of EyeDx, a company dedicated to preventative screening of children's vision. Dr. Hoover's research interests are in the area of intelligent systems, with an emphasis on tracking, embedded systems, and medical informatics.

Bland and almost completely useless.

I recently took a c programming class and had to get this book for it. I concurrently took three other programming classes (Perl, python, and Java) and had much better experiences in those classes with different textbooks. Most irritating was the typos in the binary logic section which threw off my calculations and were really not explained well for beginners. On top of that, there were no interesting sections, the writing was bland, and the examples were elementary. At least my other books had interesting project descriptions (Perl - web crawlers, indexers, rankers, search engine optimization; python - biomorphs, ant clustering, cellular automata, genetic algorithms, lsystems).

Maybe I was expecting more from a generic c class (with a standard c textbook) but I was highly disappointed. I am left with no clue as to what I practical things I can do in c. The main thing I learnd that also related to my Perl work has been pointers, which are just like references in Perl.. but even those were not clearly explained in this book. I got more out of stackoverflow q&a's and online research than I did in this entire book (and in my entire c class).

Overpriced garbage.

This is not the book to purchase if you're interested in not falling asleep while reading. You are much better-off reading K&R's The C Programming Language. Most of the contents of that book cover the topics in this book far more effectively. The only strength that this book has, and hence the 2 stars instead of 1, is that it offers an introduction to memory mappings and data structures. But what good is the book if it bores you to death? And what if that book costs you $100??? You can download K&R for free online...

Fast, Powerful, Fun

This is a fast-paced book on system admin and the Unix/Mac/Linux environment. It emphasizes the historical and technical importance of C without being a comprehensive or even introductory guide to the language. Rather the focus is on the essence of system programming: what can be done and how to figure out to do it.

My Cal State college is utilizing it for a course (designated for the IT major or as an elective within other disciplines) on this very subject. I'm taking it as an upper-division math major with a strong interest in social justice and the use of open-source systems in education--and loving it. This text, in particular, is probably my strongest of the semester.

Here are the highlights:
Equally challenging/accessible to professionals, upper- and under-classmen: This is not a point-by-point, 1,000 page, do-it-all-for-you, extremely elementary, 1-cent-word introduction. Yet all it assumes is a mature audience and the ability to think--as well as find other sources of information--for oneself.
Theoretical, but with plenty of concrete examples: It doesn't shortchange the student from under-the-hood methodologies, or by neglecting to exemplify them practically.
Concise: It doesn't reteach you everything you've ever learned, e.g. arithmetic, loops, how to tie your shoes; or devote half of its page weight to historical biographies.
Unusual subject matter: System administration is critical to computing professions, but goes unmentioned in many introductory computer science classes.

In all, I give this book a full-five stars because it sets out to do something valuable, does it, and does so stylistically well.
