On his quest for serenity and deeper meaning of life on the bohemian refuge of Lamma Island in Hong Kong, a retired investment consultant stumbled on an adventure intertwined with arguably three of the most horrific events in the recent history of China - the Cultural Revolution, the June 4th Incident and the Great Sichuan Earthquake - each roughly twenty years apart.
As the fervor of the Cultural Revolution of China reached its zenith in 1967, Hong Kong (then a British Colony) was teetering at the mercy of bloody riots, looting and home-made bombs. On August 24th 1967, Lam Bun (a highly popular radio program anchor who spoke out against the pro-China rioters) was burned to death in his car in an apparent political assassination. There were no witnesses and no arrests were ever made regarding the case. The Cultural Revolution claimed over a million lives. Lam Bun’s murder would be considered inconsequential and inevitable under the circumstances.
What happened at the Tiananmen Square on June 4th 1989 would once again bring China into the spotlight. The whole world watched on television the horrific images of tanks driving into the Square and soldiers firing into the fleeing demonstrators. Many lives were lost during that incident. The Chinese authorities have yet to release the number of people killed, let alone their identities.
On May 12th 2008, an earthquake measured at 8.0 on the Richter scale, hit the Sichuan province. Nearly 70,000 were killed and 11 of the 15 million inhabitants in the affected areas were left homeless.
Imagine that through a quirk of fate and among the ruins of the earthquake, our protagonist would come face to face with the man who was the mastermind behind the murder of Lam Bun in 1967 and who was in charge of disposing the corpses of those killed at Tiananmen Square in 1989!

enjoyable and fun to read

As soon as I picked up "Lamma Island" and read from the beginning chapters I felt immediately connected with the author. The story is engaging right from the start and Bob has succeeded in engaging his readers by developing a storyline to target a wide range of audiences. John, who is the main character of this the book, will take you through an exciting journey of a man trying to restart his new life in Lamma Island and meet with plenty of surprising developments. The story also incorporated some significant historic events in modern China and prominent political figures behind the storyline to give the readers insights into the Communist world. All is all, I highly recommend this novel and it is really a pleasure to read. I am looking forward to read Bob's next novel!

Fantastic Story-telling

Fantastic, descriptive story-telling. It was a remarkable journey from Lamma Island to Chengdu with unbridled twists and turns along the way. The characters come alive with each turn of the page. I love the way the story is written with the reality of important historical events intertwined with suspense and anxious moments and a dash of romantic interludes. It was easy to establish a social and sympathetic relationship with the characters that the reader would feel both their pain and their joy and comes to care about what happens to them. And the ending is not something a reader would expect at the beginning nor at the midpoint. 5.0 out of 5.0. Kudos to Bob Choi.

Intriguing Read!

Lamma Island is an intriguing read. A peaceful island, mysterious coffee shop owner, local government involvement, and natural disaster surprisingly form a stimulating story. Each character in the story was set up thoroughly and contributed to this unpredictable story. A couple times, I thought I was able to figure out the outcome but it turned out to be a surprise. The twists and turns of the book indeed resemble a fascinating movie.

This book is a real page turner and I hope this book can turn into a movie!

Heroes of the Holocaust

Although only 64 pages, this slender volume does an excellent job describing many people involved in saving the lives of Jews during this period. However, it does much more than that. The preface gives an overview of what the Holocaust was and the historical factors that created it. Despite the challenges in addressing this sensitive topic, information about the holocaust is provided that is appropriate for children as young as ten.
The author also has a timeline that highlights and summarizes the subjects she presented as well as a glossary of vocabulary, a bibliography, and an index. For the most part, the book is written in short declarative sentences. This style makes it more accessible not only for 4th to 6th graders, but also for older students who may be second language readers. Photographs, maps and quotations highlight each chapter and add interest to the narrative. People discussed in the book range from the well known, (Miep Geis, Oskar Schindler and Janusz Korczak), to others less well known, such as Chiune Sugihara, Japan's consul in Lithuania, and Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker. Unfortunately, there is no listing of these courageous people anywhere; they are buried within the index. Resistance in the ghettos and concentration camps is also cataloged. Ana Castillo's voice is one of self-confident, hypnotic melancholy. Peel My Love Like an Onion, her fifth book, often reads like a diary rather than a novel--full of dashed-off midnight eloquence but unformed. It's the story of Carmen Santos, a flamenco dancer whose right leg is shriveled from polio. Her family moved from Mexico to Chicago before she was born: "My first language was Spanish but I am not really Mexican. I guess I am Chicago-Mexican." Castillo sees the immigrant experience as a minefield of ironies. Carmen works at the Domino's in the airport as a way of being a productive American, thus gaining her father's respect. One morning on a "power walk" she realizes that the shoes she is wearing may have been made in a sweatshop by some distant relative from "somewhere... very foreign, like seaweed-and-black-fungus-in-French-Vietnamese-soup foreign."

As the book moves back and forth between Carmen's dreams of economic and emotional freedom and her erotic life (in which passion often feels as much like a trap as a release), Castillo's fluid style often lapses into carelessness. And there is a blurred quality to many of the images, like photographs taken from a moving car. Carmen's story is most engaging when she experiences isolated moments of independence: flamenco dancing, for instance, for the customers at a hair salon where she is working, dragging her bad leg around in front of the ladies under the hair dryers. Carmen "La Coja" ("The Cripple") is a flamenco dancer despite her bad leg (she had polio as a child). This is not, however, a sentimental story about her triumph over tragedy, though in an inspired early passage we do see her struggle to learn to dance. The tale spun by Castillo (So Far from God) instead focuses on an older Carmen, past her prime and piecing herself together after a tangle of romances has unraveled. Peel her love like an onion, and you get layer after layer of confusion and betrayal: just as her long affair with August!n, the double-dealing manager of her troupe, begins to stall, she falls passionately in love with August!n's "godson," the talented and charismatic Manolo. Yes, Manolo loves her ("I will never be alone as long as I love you'), but that doesn't stop him from heading off to Spain with August!n. Carmen feels pretty wind-whipped by his desertion but keeps standingAthroughout, this tough little dancer never really hits the groundAand in the end she finds her voice, literally: she can't dance any more (except for herself), but she has a new recording contract. Lyrical and sharply told, though this tale has been heard before: of course Carmen will triumph, and what makes Manolo so special, anyway? I like the author's run of descriptive language which almost feels like stream of consciousness at some points...however I expected more at the end...it was too easy, too predictable...

transparency of ethnic belonging

This novel is a product of a mixed and multicultural writer. I'm European and for our culture American multiculturalism is becoming a model for openness, but at the same tgime for closure. Carmen could be no one and everyone.She is a Chicago Mexican and a Gypsy. Her homelands are Central America and Eastern and Mediterranean Europe. Historically, these two geographical places share a common culture based on spirituality and music, but also on strict patriarchal principles embued with severe moral issues. Flamenco is a way-out, rejection of consumist and materialist society. Carmen lives a fake romantic existence and dreams of the sea, Spain, other beautiful places her lovers have described her. When she travels to Germany there is only tears and disappointment with their own history based on wars. The novel could be discussed in thousands of aspects, but here is neither place nor time. I was wondering about postmodern elements in the novel, as I'm writing my final thesis about this. If someone could help me? I hope to meet Ana Castillo in Europe-actually, in Italy!

A Healing Book.

My son gave me this book last year. Actually, he gave me the Spanish version, Carmen la Coja, which he picked up after spending a year in Spain and wanting to keep up with his Spanish. He is second generation madrileno growing up in New York. Our other connection with this book is that I suffered from polio as a child in Madrid. My parents moved to the United States when I recovered with my bout of illness in hopes of my getting better treatment here. This is not to review my life but Carmen la Coja's--brave, fierce and in touch (finally) with herself, with no advantages whatsoever. As I read, I asked myself, What would I have done if I had had such an insensitive mother as Carmen? What would I have done if I had no way to make my living but by my own wits and with the illness I personally knew and understood? Despite the many adjustments I had to make here in the States, I came to understand how fortunate I was all along. It is a courageous testimony to woman's strength. I am in the medical profession and I have recommended this book to many patients and colleagues. They have all thanked me for it later.

An Exciting Read!

I read this book not too long after it came out and I found it riveting! It's one of my all time favorite books! Hannah Wade is a beautiful officer's wife who gets captured by the Apaches. Any other gentle-born lady would kill herself rather than live after being violated by an Indian, but Hannah was determined to survive. She learns quickly from the harsh treatment and begins to settle into the Apache life. But always in the back of her mind was the desire to escape. This story goes into graphic detail of her horrible experiences and and the cruel treatment she receives after rescue. Only the love of one man strong enough to respect her strength helps her see a promising future. This book made me laugh and cry. It gave a glimpse into the Apache life and way of thinking as it revealed the pettiness and bigotry against them. There were also other characters that supported this story that made it hard to put the book down. There wasn't graphic sex, but there was adventure and suspense. I'm going to buy it to keep forever!

Love the story, hate the kindle edition

This is a story I read many years ago in a hard cover edition, and I loved the story. I consider it one of Janet Dailey's best. However, I was extremely disappointed with the Kindle edition, possibly created by Simon and Schuster's Digital Editions. I would have wanted to know, before I purchased the digital edition, that it is so full of errors and typos that in places it is almost impossible to read. Text is completely missing in places as well, with sentences that start and just drop off. Unless I compare it with the original hardcover, I have no idea what I've missed. The chapter at the end, an intro to another story, was so messed up that I stopped bothering trying to read it. For the price charged for this Kindle book, over $16, this was a disgrace and I feel like I have been gypped.

Not much romance

I was dissapointed in this book, since i was expecting to read another great romance novel from Janet Dailey. This novel was entertaining and a good read, however, there was hardly any romance going on between Hannah and Cutter or anyone else for that matter.

Saved our lives in Negril!

Even though, as Scott warns, the names of places in Negril change constantly, this book was invaluable in helping us find our way up and down the beach once we were there. The verbal "map" was especially helpful.

Update for the author and other readers: The place just east of Hedonism II, before Grand Lido, is better known as Point Village, made up of many condos with individual owners who may or may not rent them. We stayed in a studio there. Some years ago, it was a resort hotel, but now the former hotel buildings are in a state of disrepair. However, our studio was affordable, the grounds are a place of incredible natural beauty, with two private beaches and rock pools, and it is quiet and very secure.

It is like getting tips from a good friend

I have both the Kindle and book of this. I read it before going to Negril and by the time I got there, I felt like I had been there before. Yes, it is on a basic level-- yet it is like talking to a good friend before going to Negril. A great little book to bring along to look-up info during your trip. I wished my hubby read the book before we went--at first he was overwhelm (people trying to sell him things etc) but I told him some of the tips I read from the book and it worked, he felt better and was able to enjoy the culture. We LOVE Negril and look to return as soon as we can. A place not for everyone but after reading this book and if your not "scared off" you will fall in love with the place.

Not suitable for Kindle

The content of this book is fantastic for someone almost completely new to racing, like me. It won't make me a world-class handicapper, but it's perfect for being able to look at a field of horses and somewhat confidently pick out a few likely contenders. If you already know the basics, you're not going to get much out of this book.

The wagering strategy is great for beginners and opens to the door on the world of exotics while giving a newbie some idea of the bankroll one needs to seriously play them.

The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because it's terrible on the Kindle 2. The author routinely uses actual Equibase horse program excerpts for making his points, but the print is tiny in real life, let alone the Kindle 2. Even with the Zoom function they're absolutely impossible to read.

The content on its own is still worth the price, but I wish I'd gone with a paper version.

Very Informative Book

I really enjoyed this book. I went to Delaware Park yesterday and lost about as much as a usually do. However, I felt much more comfortable reading the racing form and making bets.
