About the Author
Jeanette Ellis has run a coven for twenty years, the Pagan Pride Parade for ten years, and also The Halloween Festival and Beltane Bush. Disappointed

I was excited by the prospect of this book and hoped that it would be a good addition to my library. Yet, once the book got into my hands and I eagerly sat down to read it, I found that excitement quickly fading. The author of "Forbidden Rites-Your Complete Guide to Traditional Witchcraft" states that she wrote this book "because though there are many books on Wicca there is little on other forms of Witchcraft." Actually, there are quite a few books on other forms of Witchcraft available today, but, true enough, they pale by comparison to the number of Wicca 101 books on the market.
Unfortunately, the majority of the content of this book is heavily shadowed by that self-same Wicca 101. There are a few differences of viewpoint and practice, yes, but nothing so extreme that I haven't seen similar differences of viewpoint and practice in many other Wiccan groups. Most definitely, if your idea of Trad Craft is centered around the work of Robert Cochrane, Evan John Jones, Nigel Pennick, Robin Artisson, and the like, then this book is not for you.
The author talks up how her Trad does things so differently, yet one of these touted differences is that they use different colored candles for the Quarters than Wiccans do. Which makes no sense, since not all Wiccans even use different colored Quarter candles. The author's Trad also doesn't mix the elements (salt, water, fire, incense) on their altar and they place their altar in the center and not in the North as Wiccans do. Yet, I've heard of plenty of Wiccan groups who put their altar in the center (as well as the North) and some which don't mix the elements on their altars, so I don't know what Wiccans she's been dealing with.
The 634 page book starts off talking about Gods and Goddesses, Elemental Quarters, Magickal Equipment (tools), and the Sabbats, but then it's followed by 400+ pages of material about stones, metals, herbs, charms, incense recipes, astrology, runes, totem animals, etc., all of which I've seen in other books over the years. They consist of written snippets of useful information in a friendly and concise manner and have some nice pictures attached to them, but perhaps they should have gone into a separate book?
This work is also rife with typos, run-on sentences, incomplete sentences, bad grammar and punctuation...so much so that practically every page has a mistake on it. Sometimes a paragraph is indented and sometimes it is not. Somehow, I don't think that the author meant to say that at Samhain that the Veil between the Worlds is "thiniest" or that Witches were once accused of "caring" cords. "Where" is not "were" and "there" is not "their." Basically, whoever edited this should be ashamed. By 100 pages into it I had stopped giggling and begun to wince. Of course, some authors have little control over how the final edit goes, but this is so bad that it makes you wonder if it was even edited or proofed at all.
"Forbidden Rites" is written in a friendly enough manner and is easy to read, but there are no real surprises or revelations here. There is also very little to indicate that this work is based off of a non-Wiccan style of Witchcraft originally from southern Ireland. If the author was intent on keeping secret the majority of her own Trad practice, then perhaps she did too good of a job. It's a decent enough book for what it is (if you can stand to overlook the typos and terrible job done with punctuation), but a better beginning Wicca book might be "Wicca for Beginners" by Thea Sabin. While, better books about Trad Craft are, of course, those put forth by the previously named list of authors.

Nothing new here

Just eclectic Wicca with typos and bad sentence structure. The author claims to practice "Traditional Witchcraft," rather then Wicca, but clearly has little grasp of the definitions of either paths.

Look deeper into this book!

I gave this book three stars for the content not grammer. First off, the grammer and punctuation are rather horrible. There are a few sentences that you may have to read several times to understand the content. That said, there are many gems of knowledge hid throughout this book. The book presents teachings much the way you would receive them from a real teacher, not in the spoon fed variety we are so used to. These teachings will pop up in unexpected parts of the book, so it will be next to useless as a reference. There is much great information here if you can get past the typos and editing.
